Brooks Orpik named King Clancy Memorial Trophy nominee
Apr 27, 2018The trophy goes “to the player who best exemplifies leadership qualities on and off the ice and has made a noteworthy humanitarian contribution in his community.”The King Clancy Trophy winner will receive a $40,000 donation from the NHL Foundation to benefit a charity of the winner’s choice. The winner will be selected by a panel led by Commissioner Gary Bettman and Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly.Orpik was one of the most visible Capitals players off the ice this season.During the season, Orpik most notably surprised the Tucker Road Ducks with 25 sets of new hockey equipment. The donation was courtesy of NHLPA’s Goals & Dreams Fund.The Fort Washington, Maryland team lost thousands of dollars’ worth of equipment during a fire in January of 2017. The fire damaged the building and left the Ducks without a place to practice and play games. Upon learning of the disaster, Orpik reached out to see how he could help the organization and facilitated the donation with the NHLPA.In February, Orpik participated in the Extreme Recess Hockey Clinic, an on-ice skate with Dreams for Kids DC. The Capitals defenseman also joined the Fort DuPont Cannons on the ice a few weeks later, along with teammates Madison Bowey and Devante Smith-Pelly.
